Hampshire Men's Team Edge Out U18s in Thrilling Pre-Season Encounter

The Hampshire Men’s squad and the Hampshire U18s went head-to-head in a highly competitive pre-season match at Stoneham GC, providing a fantastic display of golf ahead of the 2025 season. Played in excellent spirit, the match saw some outstanding performances from both teams, with the Men's squad narrowly clinching victory 9.5 – 8.5.

The fixture, designed to give both squads valuable match experience, lived up to expectations, with several tight contests going down to the final holes. The front 9 singles matches set the tone for the day, with both teams going head to head, trading wins throughout the session- with the men's team taking a narrow 7-5 win in to the back 9 pairs matches. As the afternoon foursomes unfolded, the U18s put in a spirited performance to keep the match finely balanced, fighting back with some impressive wins to win the session 3.5-2.5.

Despite the Men’s team ultimately securing the win, the narrow margin of victory demonstrated the impressive strength and depth of the U18 squad. Many of the younger players rose to the challenge, gaining invaluable experience against their senior counterparts.

Hampshire U18s Team Manager, David Matthews, was rightly positive about his squad’s performance: “Our players showed real character out there today. When you looked down the list of first team players, there were multiple County Champions, former winners of The Carris and Brabazon Trophies as well as countless other County accolades so for our Juniors to push such an experienced team so close is a fantastic achievement, and this will give them huge confidence heading into the season.”

With the season fast approaching, both squads will take plenty of positives from the encounter as they continue their preparations. Hampshire Golf would like to thank Stoneham GC for hosting, all the players, coaches, and supporters for making the match such a competitive and enjoyable occasion.
