Hampshire 1st Team Defeat Sussex in Dominant Display at Cowdray Park GC

James Knight, Luke Hodgetts, Stu Archibald, Rob Wheeler, Martin Young, Toby Burden, Joe Buenfeld, George Saunders

Hampshire’s 1st Team bounced back in style with a commanding 9–3 victory over Sussex at Cowdray Park Golf Club, following a home draw against Kent in May. Needing a win to stay in contention for the league title, the team showed intent from the outset and delivered a superb all-round performance.

The morning foursomes saw Hampshire seize early control, winning the session 2.5–1.5. That momentum carried into the afternoon singles, where the team displayed resilience, determination, and top class golf, storming to a 6.5–1.5 win.

Our guys really pulled together as a team with all 8 players delivering at least 1 point through the day. Our singles wins came from Joe Buenfeld and George Saunders, who set the tone by winning the opening two singles matches emphatically. James Knight and Martin Young followed, both showing their experience—Knight securing a valuable half after being 3 down and Young grinding out a vital point from being 1 down with 2 holes to play, finding a birdie on the last to clinch the point. Stuart Archibald dazzled on the front nine with a flurry of birdies to take a commanding early lead and secure a 5&4 win, while Rob Wheeler delivered a solid performance to take his match 3&1 in a match in which he never fell behind in. Captain Toby Burden capped off the day by winning his point and sealing a comprehensive team victory.

The win propels Hampshire to the top of the table with one match to play—against Surrey at Hayling Golf Club in August—with everything to play for in the race for the South East League title and, with it, a place in a 3rd straight regional final.
